Lawyers Gone Wild: Are Depositions Still a Civil Procedure Note

    Get PDF
Depositions are an extremely effective and widely used discovery device. Unfortunately, attorneys and litigants seeking to frustrate their opponents often abuse the deposition process by using obstructionist, or “Rambo,” tactics. This Note examines different types of deposition misconduct and the different approaches courts have used to remedy these problems. This Note then looks at deposition misconduct in Connecticut and the sanctioning power of its state courts. Finally, this Note sets forth several suggestions on how to better curb deposition misconduct, including more frequent judicial intervention, greater use of video depositions to provide better evidence of misconduct, and wider observance of the American College of Trial Lawyers Code of Pretrial Conduct

Molecular profiling of resident and infiltrating mononuclear phagocytes during rapid adult retinal degeneration using single-cell RNA sequencing.

Neuroinflammation commonly accompanies neurodegeneration, but the specific roles of resident and infiltrating immune cells during degeneration remains controversial. Much of the difficulty in assessing myeloid cell-specific functions during disease progression arises from the inability to clearly distinguish between activated microglia and bone marrow-derived monocytes and macrophages in various stages of differentiation and activation within the central nervous system. Using an inducible model of photoreceptor cell death, we investigated the prevalence of infiltrating monocytes and macrophage subpopulations after the initiation of degeneration in the mouse retina. In vivo retinal imaging revealed infiltration of CCR2+ leukocytes across retinal vessels and into the parenchyma within 48 hours of photoreceptor degeneration. Immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry confirmed and characterized these leukocytes as CD11b+CD45+ cells. Single-cell mRNA sequencing of the entire CD11b+CD45+ population revealed the presence of resting microglia, activated microglia, monocytes, and macrophages as well as 12 distinct subpopulations within these four major cell classes. Our results demonstrate a previously immeasurable degree of molecular heterogeneity in the innate immune response to cell-autonomous degeneration within the central nervous system and highlight the necessity of unbiased high-throughput and high-dimensional molecular techniques like scRNAseq to understand the complex and changing landscape of immune responders during disease progression

Pseudoscalar singlet physics with staggered fermions

We report on progress in measuring disconnected correlators associated with pseudoscalar flavor-singlet mesons. This will eventually allow us to compute the masses of the eta and eta' mesons. Flavor-singlet physics also presents an interesting test of the staggered fermion formulation, as disconnected correlators are sensitive to whether the same action governs both sea quarks and valence quarks. It can also help test the validity of the ``fourth-root trick'' used in unquenched lattice calculations where the number of flavors Nf<4N_f<4.Comment: Talk presented at Lattice 2005 (Hadron spectrum and quark masses), 6 pages, 3 figure

Scalar glueball and meson spectroscopy in unquenched lattice QCD with improved staggered quarks

    Get PDF
We present results of an exploratory study of singlet scalar states in unquenched QCD using both glueball and meson operators. Results for non-singlet non-strange scalar mesons are also presented. We use Asqtad improved staggered fermions and gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration at lattice spacings of .12 and .09 fm. In this formulation, the glueball mass is not significantly different from the quenched value at finite lattice spacing. Significant taste violations are present in the scalar sector. At light quark masses, decay channels complicate the mass determinations. There is some evidence that the non-strange singlet meson lies below the non-singlet meson.Comment: Lattice 2005 (hadron spectrum and quark masses), 6 pages, 4 figure

Hypervelocity Impact of Composite Overwrap Pressure Vessels

    Get PDF
There is a limited amount of hypervelocity impact (HVI) data on pressurized composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV). In recent years, NASA has performed HVI tests to characterize impact conditions resulting in either leak or burst of the COPVs representative of spacecraft hardware. This paper reports on the results of 40 tests that have been conducted on several types of COPV configurations, pressurized by inert gas to near the vessels rated maximum expected operating pressure (MEOP). These tests were used to better understand COPV response under HVI conditions and develop ballistic limit equations (BLE) related to these tests
